‘Resonance’ is a bit of a travel of the mind back in time. Much of the material is a reflection of the current events of a past era. Other selections are observations of our life and times that are not quite as ominous in immediate ramifications, but are necessary for our thought process in regards to the future of our world. As with the other three volumes of Cosmic Circumstance, these selections are a collection of earlier works that have been brought forward for presentation at this time. Though many of these selections would seem dated in relevance to today’s world, remember the words from the past that state the thought – something to the effect of – ‘those who forget the past, are doomed to repeat it’. As to the timing of this publication, it would seem that the words and thought expressed in years – decades – past have become relevant again as the specter of nuclear weapons use again rears its ugly head. A thought that comes to mind is whether a new generation of belligerent governments will use this technology merely as a bargaining chip or actually think it could be useful as tool of war to further their zeal to promote mindless and archaic delusions. At the time much of this work was produced – the so called ‘east and west’ were in a state of ‘cold war’ and battled each other with proxies, economics and propaganda. There were hotspots such as Korea and Vietnam where America did sacrifice our citizen’s lives to stem the flow of the communist advance. Contrary to popular lore, these actions were as much of a deterrent as were the tens of thousands nuclear warheads in the arsenals of the belligerent foes. It has to be said that in the mindset of the times, I thought if we could just get past the showdown between the Soviet Union and the West, there would be a dawning of a new age of understanding and cooperation amongst the world powers. It could be said that this actually occurred for a brief time. Now there is a new threat to world peace that has religious roots so far in the past that it is almost incomprehensible that it could be relevant today. Also it seems that the old ‘east/west’ confrontation never really ended and this coupled with new members of the ‘nuclear club’ who have come to be, could easily elicit doom for civilization and the planet as we know it. I can only hope they understand the difference between a nuclear bomb and a hydrogen bomb. There is an upside to progression of the drawdown of weapons in the arsenals of cold war adversaries, we now have about one tenth of the warheads we had at the height of the conflict. That leaves somewhere around five to six thousand ready to launch. Isn’t that a rosy outlook? A couple of hundred detonations would create ‘nuclear winter’, which would affect weather patterns and the production of food. More people would die from starvation than from the destructive blast of the weapon. Millions would die in the blasts and billions would die from starvation. I naively thought we had progressed past this. Apparently not.
